Step 1: Prepare the base
- In a saucepan, combine soy sauce, dark soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, garlic, and ginger. Stir well.
Step 2: Add spices
- Sprinkle in the Chinese five-spice powder. Mix to evenly distribute the flavors.
Step 3: Simmer the sauce
- Add water and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Stir occasionally for 10 minutes.
Step 4: Thicken the sauce
- Slowly whisk in the cornstarch slurry. Stir continuously until the sauce thickens and coats the back of a spoon.
Step 5: Cool and store
- Remove from heat. Let it cool slightly, then transfer to a jar. Keep in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use it.
